UPDATE: Speeding drivers along Philadelphia’s Broad Street will now face immediate fines, with tickets starting at $100 as of today, following the end of a 60-day warning period. This enforcement action is a critical step in reducing dangerous driving behaviors on one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares.

For those exceeding the speed limit of 25 mph, authorities are now mailing tickets for violations of just 11 mph over the limit. This initiative, overseen by the Philadelphia Parking Authority, will send fines directly to the registered owner of the vehicle, making it crucial for all drivers to be aware of their speed.

Drivers are reacting strongly to the new rules. Alejandro Sanchez expressed disbelief, stating, “That’s crazy. It’s too much.” Another driver shared their experience of receiving multiple warnings in quick succession, saying, “I got two warnings, two minutes apart.”

The speed cameras, now operational 24/7, are strategically placed at 15 intersections across North and South Broad Street. Fines can escalate to $150 for more severe violations, adding an additional layer of urgency for motorists.

Officials highlight that these measures have already proven effective in other areas. For instance, following the installation of speed cameras on Roosevelt Boulevard, speeding violations plummeted by 95%, and pedestrian injuries decreased by 50%. Authorities believe that similar outcomes can be achieved on Broad Street, where pedestrian Asia Daily supports the initiative, saying, “I think it’s a great idea. I feel like a lot of cars don’t take pedestrians into consideration and bikers as well.”

The push for enhanced traffic safety is part of a broader initiative to protect both pedestrians and cyclists in Philadelphia. As the city implements these measures, the hope is to create a safer environment for everyone on the road.

Drivers should take immediate action to avoid hefty fines by adhering to speed limits. With tickets being mailed out starting today, it’s essential to stay alert and drive safely along Broad Street.
