Remembering Sylvia Columbia: A Life of Service and Compassion
Sylvia Elaine (Salmond) Columbia, aged 86, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, at the Alpine Healthcare Center in Keene, New Hampshire. Born on October 27, 1939, in Springfield, Vermont, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Iva (Burke) Salmond, who resided in Perkinsville, Vermont. Sylvia’s life was marked by her dedication to service, compassion, and community involvement.
A graduate of Springfield High School in 1957, Sylvia pursued further education at Rutland Business College, completing her studies in business and nursing in 1958. Shortly after, she joined the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), serving from 1958 to 1960. During her time at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, she forged lifelong friendships, highlighting her commitment to camaraderie. Sylvia was honorably discharged in December 1960 as a disabled veteran, an achievement she remained proud of throughout her life.
Upon returning to Vermont, Sylvia began her career in the Nursing Department at Springfield Hospital, where she exemplified her deep-seated desire to care for others. Her commitment to the well-being of her family and friends remained unwavering, even as her health declined. Sylvia later transitioned to the Jones & Lamson Machine Company in Springfield, where she served as an electrician for 18 years and held the position of chief steward. She was also actively involved as an officer of the United Electrical and Machine Workers of America Local 218.
Sylvia’s retirement in 1983 was due to health issues, but her passion for life continued unabated. An avid animal lover, she filled her home with a variety of pets, including dogs, cats, and even goats and rabbits at times. Growing up on a farm fostered her enduring affection for animals.
In addition to her love for animals, Sylvia was a devoted sports enthusiast. She passionately supported her children and grandchildren during their athletic events, cheering for them through all weather conditions. Her competitive spirit was exemplified when she participated in the National Veterans Golden Age Games in 2009 and 2010, representing New Hampshire. She excelled in the 10 Meter Air Rifle competition for those over 65, winning a gold medal in 2010.
Sylvia is preceded in death by her siblings, including Correnne Wilber of Buffalo, New York, Bob Salmond of Orange, California, and Edris Salmond of Perkinsville, Vermont. She is survived by her three sons: John van Wezel, Jr. of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; Robert van Wezel of Keene, New Hampshire; and William Lucius (Donna Briggs) of Manchester, New Hampshire. She is also remembered by her sister-in-law Helen Salmond of Orange, California, and her three grandchildren, Sarah Lucius (and great-grandchild Kash) of Concord, New Hampshire; Jami van Wezel of Keene, New Hampshire; and Jordan van Wezel and wife Maddie of Natick, Massachusetts, along with several nieces and nephews across New York, California, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
At this time, no formal services are planned. A military service will take place in spring or summer at Plain Cemetery in Weathersfield, Vermont, with the specific date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Friends of Veterans at 28 Farmvu Drive, Suite 3, White River Junction, VT 05001 or to the New Hampshire SPCA at 104 Portsmouth Ave, Stratham, NH 03885.
Sylvia Columbia’s legacy of service, love for animals, and dedication to family and friends will be cherished by all who knew her. Her remarkable life serves as an inspiration to many in her community and beyond.
