BREAKING: The FBI has arrested NBA player Terry Rozier and coach Chauncey Phillips in a shocking match-rigging investigation, raising urgent questions about the integrity of professional sports. In light of these developments, a new survey by the UK-based research agency YouGov reveals that a staggering 65% of Americans suspect athletes manipulate their performance for bettors’ gain.

The survey, which included responses from 19,000 participants, asked, “How frequently do Americans believe that professional athletes perform differently for sports bettors to profit?” The results show deep-seated skepticism among the American public regarding the authenticity of sports outcomes. Notably, 32% of respondents indicated they “sometimes” think athletes alter their playstyle to accommodate betting outcomes, while 29% admitted uncertainty on the matter. Alarmingly, only 6% expressed confidence that athletes never influence game results for financial gain.

The implications of this survey are profound, especially as 28% of those surveyed reported having placed sports bets themselves. The data indicates a stark divide in perspectives—sports bettors are significantly more likely to believe that athletes “sometimes” or “often” perform differently to influence betting results. In fact, four-fifths of bettors expressed distrust towards professional athletes, highlighting a growing concern over sports integrity.

Additionally, the survey explored opinions on the legalization of sports betting. Less than 10% of non-bettors viewed this shift positively, compared to 24% of bettors who embraced it. This discrepancy underscores a complex relationship between betting and perceptions of fairness in sports.

The survey also examined public sentiment towards major sportsbooks. When asked about their feelings toward working for the top 10 sportsbooks, only one—Betway—saw a slight reputation boost of 0.1% from the previous year. Conversely, FanDuel and DraftKings suffered reputation declines of 3.1% each, as the industry faces increasing scrutiny.

As the FBI’s investigation unfolds, these findings highlight a critical moment for the future of sports betting and athlete integrity. The combination of high-profile arrests and public skepticism raises urgent questions: What reforms are necessary to restore trust in professional sports? How will this affect future betting regulations?

Stay tuned for updates as this developing story continues to impact the world of sports and betting. The questions raised by this survey are more pressing than ever, and the integrity of the games we love hangs in the balance.
