Voters Approve Spurs’ $311M Arena Plan in San Antonio
BREAKING: Voters in Bexar County, Texas have just approved a groundbreaking proposal that brings the San Antonio Spurs one step closer to a new downtown arena. In a decisive vote on Tuesday, over 52% of voters endorsed committing up to $311 million in venue taxes for the construction of a state-of-the-art multipurpose facility.
This monumental decision could reshape the sports and entertainment landscape in San Antonio and marks a significant victory for the Spurs, who are set to invest at least $500 million into the project, covering potential cost overruns. “We love this city, we love this county, and the county and the city love us back,” stated Peter J. Holt, chairman of Spurs Sports and Entertainment, during a press conference following the announcement.
The Spurs’ proposal includes promises of approximately $1.4 billion in private development surrounding the new arena, which aims to boost the local economy and create jobs. Additionally, a separate measure that passed simultaneously allows lawmakers to allocate around $200 million for increased rodeo activities in San Antonio, further enhancing community engagement.
The Spurs made a compelling case to voters, emphasizing that the venue taxes would primarily be paid by visitors through hotel stays and rental cars, without incurring any additional burden on local property taxes. This strategic financial plan was crucial in gaining voter support, despite earlier polling suggesting significant challenges.
“We’re ready to do something really special that’s going to help the Spurs, it’s going to help the rodeo, it’s going to help all sectors of the community and it’s going to be right in the heart of our city,” Holt asserted. “This is something we deserve. Our fans deserve it. Our community deserves it. We’re going to believe and execute big things.”
Despite the victory, there are still questions about the timeline for construction and the specifics of the city’s contribution to the project. Gina Ortiz Jones, the city’s mayor, has called for further analysis before moving forward, emphasizing the need for a thorough examination of the finances involved.
The current lease for the Spurs at their home, the Frost Bank Center, is set to expire in 2032, creating an urgent need for planning and development as the team looks to its future. With the design stage just beginning, community members and fans are eager to see how this ambitious project unfolds.
