NIU Confirms Production of Electric Microcar, Launching Soon!
UPDATE: NIU has just announced that its electric microcar, the NIUMM, is officially headed for production, marking a significant step for urban mobility. This development was revealed at the EICMA 2025, the renowned Milan Motorcycle Show, where the compact vehicle was showcased to eager attendees.
The NIUMM is designed for city dwellers, especially those who already own a NIU scooter, as it utilizes the same batteries. Powered by two NQi batteries, this innovative microcar boasts a range of approximately 70 km (43 miles) and can reach speeds of up to 45 km/h (28 mph), adhering to the maximum speed limit for the L6e quadricycle category.
In a statement, NIU’s Director of International, Sieghart Michielsen, confirmed that the vehicle is currently completing homologation testing, which is the final hurdle before its commercial launch. This announcement comes at a time when demand for L6e quadricycles is surging in European cities, where compact, low-speed vehicles are becoming increasingly popular among young drivers, urban residents, and seniors seeking accessible transportation options.
The burgeoning market for electric microcars signals a shift in urban transportation, as these vehicles combine affordability with eco-friendly technology. The NIUMM features extra battery slots that allow users to double their range, providing flexibility for longer trips without the hassle of traditional cars.
As cities continue to evolve toward car-light futures, the NIUMM joins the ranks of other successful L6e models like the Citroen Ami, Renault Twizy, and Microlino. These vehicles have captured the hearts of urban residents, offering a practical and stylish alternative to conventional cars. The Citroen Ami, for instance, is celebrated for its minimalist design and economical price point of around €7,000, appealing to a broad audience through car-sharing platforms.
While specific pricing and availability details for the NIUMM remain unclear, the momentum is palpable. The microcar’s straightforward design and electric drivetrain are expected to resonate with consumers looking for a simple and efficient way to navigate bustling city streets.
As NIU prepares to launch the NIUMM, all eyes are on this emerging player in the microcar market. The potential for this vehicle to redefine urban commuting is significant, and it could pave the way for more innovative solutions in the future.
Stay tuned for updates on pricing and the official launch date, as this exciting development unfolds. The future of urban mobility is here, and the NIUMM is set to make a splash!
