UPDATE: In a decisive election held on November 7, 2023, voters in Duluth have backed two DFL candidates to fill at-large seats on the City Council. Incumbent Council President Terese Tomanek has been re-elected, garnering 10,504 votes, which translates to a commanding 34.3% of the total, while newcomer Jordon Johnson secured a seat with 8,515 votes or 27.8%.

This election marks a significant shift in Duluth’s political landscape, especially with Tomanek’s solid win and Johnson’s successful comeback after his previous unsuccessful bid for office. Their victories signal a commitment to address the pressing issues facing the city, such as housing and budget management.

Tomanek, 72, who has served since 2020, expressed her gratitude and excitement, stating, “This council has done great work, and I’m excited to work with the next council.” She emphasized the importance of continuing to support the city’s economic base while balancing the budget. “We have a great leader in our mayor, and we’re going to continue to move our city forward,” she added.

Johnson, 53, a well-known nonprofit leader, highlighted the urgent need to tackle the housing crisis and economic challenges. “I am very excited to be a part of the council and just really grateful for my team and everybody who came out to vote and support our campaign,” he said. His experience as the associate director of the American Indian Community Housing Organization positions him as a strong advocate for community needs.

Meanwhile, former councilor Derek Medved and Asher Estrin-Haire were unable to secure enough votes, with Medved receiving 7,552 votes (24.66%) and Estrin-Haire achieving 3,869 votes (12.63%). Both candidates had campaigned on various local issues but fell short in this election.

Tomanek has indicated that her priorities will continue to include housing, budget management, and enhancing community civility. “I’d really like to continue working on civility and even beyond that, work toward kindness,” she stated, reflecting a growing desire for unity post-election.

Johnson echoed similar sentiments, recognizing the community’s concerns about potential tax increases due to budget shortfalls. “We also really need to think about community safety and making sure our communities are safe and secure,” he emphasized, underscoring the importance of public safety in his campaign.

As Duluth moves forward with this new council, residents are hopeful for positive changes and effective governance. The new council members will be expected to address the city’s most pressing issues while fostering a collaborative environment. Stay tuned for further updates as their terms begin and plans unfold.
