BANGOR — In a commanding performance, the Bangor girls soccer team secured their third consecutive Class A North title by defeating Camden Hills with a score of 4-1 on October 28, 2023. The Rams, who are the defending state champions, initiated their victory just 42 seconds into the match and maintained their lead throughout.

Head coach Jay Kemble expressed his confidence in the team’s readiness after observing their practice prior to the game. “They were really loose,” he noted. “They just had that right energy that you want them to have going into a game.” His players demonstrated that energy early on, with senior Gabby Roy scoring two goals in the first half, setting the tone for the match.

Key Moments in the Match

The Rams showcased their offensive prowess, with Georgie Stephenson adding another goal in the 47th minute. Her shot, a left-footer that struck the right post, was a highlight of the match. Shortly thereafter, junior Gabby Gordon found the net in the 51st minute, further extending Bangor’s lead. The only goal for Camden Hills came from freshman Elsa Schwalm, who scored in the 11th minute, but it was not enough to shift the momentum.

Bangor’s goalkeeper, junior Emily Caulkins, was instrumental in the team’s success, saving six shots throughout the match. Meanwhile, freshman Eliza Gallant made three saves for Camden Hills, who concluded their season with a record of 15-2, both losses occurring against Bangor.

Looking Ahead

With this victory, Bangor advances to the Class A state championship game, where they will face Scarborough at 11 a.m. on November 4, 2023, at Messalonskee High School. This matchup marks the third consecutive meeting between Bangor and Scarborough in the Class A final.

Reflecting on the game strategy, Coach Kemble noted the importance of adjusting to Camden Hills’ defensive tactics. “We had talked about the overload that Camden does defensively to take away our right side, and we had to switch the field and get the ball to the backside,” he explained. With players like Gabby Roy, known for her speed and athleticism, Bangor was able to exploit openings effectively.

The victory not only emphasizes Bangor’s dominance in the region but also sets the stage for an exciting championship clash next week. The community continues to rally behind the team as they pursue further success in the state tournament.
