Duke and Texas Clash in Dick Vitale Invitational on Nov. 4
The Texas Longhorns will compete against the No. 6 Duke Blue Devils in the inaugural Dick Vitale Invitational on November 4, 2025, at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C. This matchup marks a significant moment in college basketball, honoring the legendary broadcaster and advocate for cancer research, Dick Vitale.
At 86 years old, Vitale has faced numerous health challenges, including multiple battles with cancer. His determination to return to the broadcasting booth is a testament to his passion for the sport and his commitment to raising awareness for pediatric cancer. In an interview with the Associated Press, Vitale expressed his gratitude for being able to continue his work, stating, “I’m pinching myself. I really do. I mean, I find it amazing to be honest with you.”
A Tribute to a Basketball Icon
The event was announced by ESPN Events in June as a celebration of Vitale’s contributions to college basketball. His energetic commentary style has made him a beloved figure since he began calling games for ESPN in 1979. Known for his enthusiastic catchphrases like “Diaper Dandies!” and “Better get a TO, baby!”, Vitale’s presence has been a staple in sports broadcasting.
Sean Miller, head coach of the Texas Longhorns, reflected on Vitale’s impact, recalling his own experiences as a high school player when Vitale called one of his games. “His passion for college basketball, his knowledge, he made the game better and certainly impacted coaches, players, and teams,” Miller noted. The respect within the basketball community underscores the significance of this event, which showcases both teams’ talent while commemorating Vitale’s legacy.
Vitale’s Health Journey and Future Plans
Vitale’s journey through cancer treatment began in 2021 with a melanoma diagnosis. Since then, he has undergone various treatments for lymphoma, chemotherapy, and surgery for vocal cord cancer. His resilience has inspired many, as he shares updates about his health journey candidly. “I used to say yes to everybody,” Vitale remarked about managing his workload. Now, he is more selective about his engagements to safeguard his health.
Despite the challenges, Vitale remains committed to his advocacy for pediatric cancer research. The V Foundation, which he co-founded, has raised over $105 million for cancer research in its 20-year history. Vitale continues to promote fundraising efforts, including a current raffle for a 2026 BMW Z4 convertible, emphasizing the importance of community support in his mission.
As the Duke-Texas game approaches, the atmosphere is charged with excitement. Vitale’s colleagues, including longtime analyst Jay Bilas, have praised his fortitude throughout his health struggles. Bilas said, “It’ll be great to not only see him, but see him doing what he’s spent so much of his life doing.”
This upcoming game not only represents a clash of two powerhouse teams but also serves as a celebration of Vitale’s enduring spirit and love for basketball. The Dick Vitale Invitational is set to be a memorable event, showcasing the heart of college basketball while honoring a man who has given so much to the sport.
