Toronto Blue Jays Honor Dodgers’ Alex Vesia with Tribute Caps
UPDATE: The Toronto Blue Jays have made a heartfelt gesture, joining the Los Angeles Dodgers in honoring reliever Alex Vesia by wearing his number 51 on their caps during the World Series. Vesia is currently away from the Dodgers due to a deeply personal family matter, as confirmed by the team in a statement on social media just before Game 1.
In a powerful show of solidarity, Blue Jays relievers, including Chris Bassitt, Seranthony Dominguez, Mason Fluharty, and Louis Varland, sported Vesia’s number during Game 6 on October 13, 2023, which ended in a 3-1 victory for the Dodgers, setting the stage for a decisive Game 7.
The emotional tribute has resonated deeply within the baseball community. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed appreciation for the Blue Jays’ acknowledgment amidst the intense competition of the World Series. “It’s everything,” Roberts stated before Game 7. “I think it really speaks to the brotherhood of athletes… It’s a huge, huge tribute to Alex.”
Vesia, just 29 years old, has been a crucial player for the defending champions, recording a 4-2 record with a 3.02 ERA over 68 regular-season games and contributing in the postseason with a 2-0 record and a 3.86 ERA in seven appearances.
Dodgers outfielder Enrique Hernandez shared his surprise upon noticing the number on Bassitt’s cap during Friday’s game. “For those guys to do that, it’s incredible. They understand that life is bigger than baseball,” Hernandez remarked, highlighting the human aspect of the sport.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider reinforced the importance of this tribute, stating that it reflects the character within his clubhouse. “We have a lot of good people, a lot of good humans… that just appreciate what we all do and the hardships that come with it,” Schneider remarked.
As the World Series continues with Game 7 taking place soon, the impact of this tribute serves as a reminder of the unity and compassion that can exist even in the heat of competition. Fans and players alike are encouraged to share this moment, emphasizing that the spirit of the game transcends the field.
