URGENT UPDATE: A truck transporting 21 Rhesus monkeys to a Florida laboratory overturned in Jasper County, Mississippi, on October 28, 2025, resulting in a chaotic scene as several monkeys escaped. The incident, which occurred on Interstate 59 near the 117-mile marker, has led to a frantic search for the remaining animals.

According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, six of the monkeys managed to escape from the wreckage. Tragically, five out of the six escaped monkeys were “destroyed” during the recovery efforts. Authorities confirmed they are actively searching for the one remaining monkey still at large.

“Neighbors should not approach the monkey. If spotted, call 911 immediately,”

the sheriff’s office warned.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) has responded to the scene to assist in the ongoing search and recovery operation. In a statement, Tulane University, which owns the monkeys, confirmed they are collaborating with local authorities and will send a team of animal care experts to manage the situation. They assured the public that the primates are not infectious.

“Non-human primates at the Tulane National Biomedical Research Center are provided to other research organizations to advance scientific discovery,” the university elaborated, emphasizing the importance of the animals in ongoing research efforts.

Local residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the escaped monkey, as authorities race against time to secure the area. This incident poses not only a logistical challenge but also raises concerns about animal welfare and public safety.

As the situation develops, updates will be provided by local officials. Stay tuned for more information on this urgent matter.
