South Glens Falls Girls’ Soccer Edges Troy in Playoff Opener
A tightly contested playoff match saw the South Glens Falls High School girls’ soccer team secure a 1-0 victory against Troy High School in the first round of the Class AA Section II playoffs on March 15, 2024. The game, held in South Glens Falls, showcased strong defensive performances from both teams, with the score remaining tied at 0-0 until the second half.
Throughout the first 40 minutes, both defenses held firm, preventing any scoring opportunities. Troy’s head coach, Stephen Philo, expressed satisfaction with his team’s defensive strategy. “We didn’t give up any corners and were able to just suffocate any offensive pressure they had,” Philo noted.
Emeri Buckley Shines in the Spotlight
The breakthrough came in the 55th minute when South Glens Falls found the net. Despite maintaining offensive pressure, the Bulldogs had yet to convert their chances until junior midfielder Emeri Buckley capitalized on a chaotic moment in the opposing box. After several attempts to clear the ball, it landed at Buckley’s feet, allowing her to score with ease.
“I feel like we worked really well together,” Buckley said. “It definitely wasn’t just me there. We did a really good job with our crossing and team spirit was high.”
Coach Philo praised Buckley’s contribution, highlighting her status as a first-team all-star. “She showed how valuable she is tonight, both in the offensive and defensive end,” he remarked, acknowledging her crucial role in the team’s success.
Solid Defense Propels Bulldogs Forward
Following Buckley’s goal, South Glens Falls maintained control of the match. The Bulldogs’ midfield and back line effectively neutralized Troy’s offensive efforts, limiting their opportunities to score. Philo commended players such as Gianna Marissal, Jaielynn Curley, and goalkeeper Emmalee Sheeran for their exceptional performances.
“They did a fantastic job,” Philo said. “We just limited any chances they had in transition.” This strong defensive display ensured that South Glens Falls held onto their slim lead, securing their place in the next round.
Looking ahead, South Glens Falls, seeded No. 8, will face the top-seeded Mohonasen High School on March 17 at 16:30. Philo acknowledges the challenge that lies ahead, stating, “That’s gonna be a different beast. They’re undefeated for a reason. They’re a very talented team.” He remains optimistic, believing that his players are ready to put forth their best effort in the upcoming match.
