Elizabethton Mourns the Passing of Community Icon Betty Jean Carr
Betty Jean Carr, a beloved member of the Elizabethton community, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, at the age of 96. A lifelong resident of Elizabethton, Tennessee, she was known for her warm spirit and dedication to her family, friends, and community.
Born to the late James Lawrence and Gladys (Clark) Gouge, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Carr, as well as by her siblings: Martha June (Gouge) Barbre, James L. Gouge, Carl Gouge, Sarah Beth (Gouge) Schaag, and Alan Gouge. She leaves behind a large family, including her brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronnie (Kimberly) Gouge of Dallas, Georgia, Gary (Cathy) Gouge, and Glen (JoAnn) Gouge, both from Elizabethton, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A Life of Service and Community Engagement
Betty graduated from Elizabethton High School and pursued further education at East Tennessee State College. She dedicated over 55 years of her life working at local department stores, including Watson’s and Peebles, where her friendly demeanor and welcoming smile endeared her to countless customers.
An avid traveler, Betty explored many countries, collecting treasured plates from each destination. In her later years, she found joy in working on puzzles and playing Mexican dominoes with friends and family. Her faith was central to her life, and she remained an active member of Hunter First Baptist Church, where she contributed to her community through various church activities.
Celebration of Life Service Details
A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on October 23, 2025, at Memorial Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Stephen Nauman and Pastor Jon Barnett officiating. Following the service, a graveside ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. at Mountain Home National Cemetery (Historic Section). Music during the service will be provided by Patty Hodge and Glen Gouge.
Family and friends will have the opportunity to pay their respects from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. before the service. Attendees are asked to gather at the cemetery by 12:45 p.m. for the graveside service. Condolences may be sent to the family through their website, www.memorialfcelizabethton.com.
Memorial Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the Carr family during this difficult time, reflecting the deep roots and connections Betty established throughout her life in Elizabethton.
