Niwot Gymnastics Shatters Record with 183.150; Evie Saunders Shines
UPDATE: In a stunning display of athleticism, Niwot gymnastics has just achieved their best score of the season, posting a remarkable 183.150 during a meet against the Poudre School District and Fort Morgan at their home gym. This victory, led by star junior Evie Saunders, not only sets the Cougars atop the Class 4A leaderboard but also establishes a new school record.
Just moments ago, Saunders dazzled the audience with an impressive all-around score of 37.300, securing her victory and further solidifying her status as a top contender. The Cougars have shown a phenomenal resurgence this season, jumping an astonishing 11 points from their opening meet score of 172.150.
Head coach Marisa Purcell emphasized the team’s commitment to self-improvement, stating, “Our motto this year is, ‘Our standard, our team, our fight.’ We’re focused on just us and continuing to improve every week.” This mindset appears to be paying off, as the Cougars have consistently outperformed their previous scores.
Last week, Niwot captured what was then the third-best score in the classification at 181.750, falling just short to Roosevelt, which scored 182.250. The Cougars are now poised to maintain this momentum as they head toward the state championships scheduled for November 7 and 8.
Evie Saunders, the reigning BoCoPreps.com gymnast of the year, made a strategic decision to take time off for diving and track last season. However, her return to gymnastics in June has seen her regain her competitive edge. “My goal is to show off my routines more confidently,” she expressed, noting her focus on precision as she prepares for the upcoming state meet.
With three weeks to go, Saunders is already excelling in her beam routine, which includes complex skills such as an aerial, back handspring handstand, and a full-twisting dismount. Her performance on Wednesday earned her a commendable score of 9.550 on beam alone.
The team, while smaller than last year’s championship squad, has developed a tight-knit bond, pushing each other to excel. “We’ll be louder, really cheering and showing our support for everyone else,” Saunders added. “I believe we have what it takes to repeat our title if we stay confident and showcase the hard work we’ve put in this season.”
As Niwot gymnastics continues to build on their success, the excitement is palpable among fans and teammates alike. The Cougars are determined to defend their title, and with players like Evie Saunders leading the charge, their chances look promising.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Cougars prepare for the state championships, where they will aim to solidify their legacy in Colorado gymnastics.
