UPDATE: Massachusetts taxpayers are set to receive significant rebates starting today, with approximately 3 million residents benefiting from this financial relief. The initiative comes as the state triggers an old law capping annual revenue, allowing for automatic payments to be disbursed through December 15, 2023.

Residents can expect to see payments labeled “MASTTAXRFD” in their bank accounts if they opted for direct deposit. For those receiving checks, payments will be mailed out. This week alone, officials plan to distribute 500,000 payments, followed by an additional 1 million weekly, ensuring most eligible taxpayers receive their rebates this month.

The rebates are substantial, with amounts varying based on income. For instance, a taxpayer earning $35,000 will see a rebate of around $200, while those with incomes exceeding $1 million could receive upwards of $7,000. There is no cap on rebate sizes, meaning wealthier individuals will receive larger refunds.

Taxpayers who have not yet filed their 2021 tax returns can still qualify for a refund if submitted by September 15, 2023. If eligible, refunds will be processed approximately one month post-filing, making it crucial for late filers to act swiftly.

In addition to tax rebates, Massachusetts is enacting a new statewide ban today on disposing of mattresses and textiles, including clothing and shoes. Although officials have stated that they “generally” won’t impose fines for violations, there are resources available to help residents comply with the new regulations, including donation options.

Furthermore, a significant breakthrough has occurred in the cold case of the “Lady of the Dunes.” Authorities have identified the victim as Ruth Marie Terry, a Tennessee native who was 37 years old at the time of her murder nearly fifty years ago. This development could potentially lead to new insights into her unsolved case.

As the state gears up for the upcoming elections, the deadline for ballot submissions is 5 p.m. today. Secretary of State Bill Galvin’s office urges voters to drop off their ballots in person to ensure timely delivery.

Stay updated as these critical developments unfold in Massachusetts, where both financial relief and significant legal changes are impacting residents directly.
