BREAKING: Former U.S. congressional candidate Adem Bunkeddeko has just announced his candidacy for New York State Comptroller in the upcoming 2026 election. This announcement adds another Democrat to the race against incumbent Tom DiNapoli, who has held the office since 2007.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Bunkeddeko emphasized the need for change, declaring, “For too long, the Comptroller’s office has been on the sidelines – and New Yorkers have paid the price.” His campaign is focused on critical issues affecting New Yorkers, including plans to audit the Metropolitan Transportation Agency, expand housing access vouchers, and promote clean energy initiatives to boost the economy in upstate New York.

Bunkeddeko, who previously challenged Rep. Yvette Clarke in New York’s 9th Congressional District in 2018 and 2020, is no stranger to competitive races. He narrowly lost in his first attempt and placed second in a five-way contest two years later. His experience positions him as a formidable contender in this high-stakes election.

Joining him in the Democratic primary are Drew Warshaw, a former assistant secretary to Governor Eliot Spitzer, and Raj Goyle, an entrepreneur and attorney. Meanwhile, Joseph Hernandez, a biotech entrepreneur and Cuban American immigrant, is vying for the Republican nomination.

Tom DiNapoli is currently the longest-serving non-congressional statewide officeholder, having consistently held the comptroller position since 2007. His incumbency faces increasing scrutiny as Bunkeddeko and other challengers aim to reshape the office’s role in New York governance.

As the 2026 election approaches, Bunkeddeko’s campaign will likely gain momentum, especially as he appeals to voters looking for proactive leadership in state financial management. With significant issues at stake, New Yorkers are poised to see a spirited race develop.

Stay tuned for further updates on this unfolding story as we continue to monitor the candidates and their platforms leading up to the election.
