UPDATE: Urgent safety measures are in effect at Nanakuli Beach, Oʻahu, following multiple shark sightings that have left beachgoers on high alert. Just yesterday, a 7-8 foot non-aggressive shark was spotted at 10:55 a.m., prompting immediate responses from local authorities to ensure visitor safety.

Shortly after, officials from the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department reported a significant sighting of a 10-foot tiger shark in the area. Beach officials are urging all visitors to remain vigilant and report any shark encounters to Ocean Safety personnel or dial 911.

In a previous incident, a shark measuring between 6 to 10 feet forced lifeguards to clear the water and post warning signs around 1:20 p.m.. Lifeguards, in collaboration with Ocean Safety crews, are maintaining a vigilant watch from both land and sea, ensuring that beachgoers are kept informed and safe from potential marine threats.

Shark sightings on Oʻahu’s leeward coast are a recurring issue, tracked by the state with a public incident log accessible to residents and tourists. The Department of Land and Natural Resources has documented multiple incidents this year, providing essential safety tips for all water users sharing the ocean with these marine creatures. Key precautions include swimming in groups, avoiding murky waters, and steering clear of the ocean during dawn and dusk when shark activity peaks.

In response to these recent sightings, lifeguard protocols have been activated, involving the clearing of swimmers, implementation of warning signs, and ongoing patrols until the situation is reassessed by Ocean Safety officials. Similar actions were taken earlier this year during sightings at Makaha and Waimea Bay, according to a report by Hawaii News Now.

For those considering a swim or surf session at Nanakuli Beach Park, local lifeguards and the Department of Land and Natural Resources recommend checking in with an on-duty lifeguard or following local ocean safety channels for the latest updates before entering the water.

Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops. Your safety is our priority!
