UWS Hockey and Basketball Teams Face Tough Losses in Recent Games
UPDATE: The Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets endured a challenging weekend, concluding their participation in the Superior Showdown while the men’s basketball team faced another defeat, dropping to Loras in a nail-biting finish.
In men’s hockey, UWS clinched a 5-2 victory over St. Scholastica in the third-place game on Saturday, November 29, at Wessman Arena in Superior. Despite leading 2-0 early on, the Yellowjackets saw the Saints level the score before Carson Riddle netted a decisive power-play goal with just 4:31 remaining in the second period. The Yellowjackets extended their lead with two more goals, including a shorthanded effort from Daniel Roszival and another power-play goal from Chris Ishmael in the third period. UWS goalie Kobe Grant made 27 saves to secure the win.
Earlier in the tournament, UWS faced a tough 4-1 defeat to Dubuque, where they struggled offensively, registering only one goal despite firing 31 shots at the opposing goalie. UWS’s record now stands at 4-3-1 as they gear up for their next Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Wisconsin-River Falls on Friday.
Meanwhile, the UWS women’s hockey team suffered a heart-wrenching 1-0 overtime loss to St. Norbert on Sunday. Goalie Jayda Moyer delivered an impressive performance with 38 saves, but a goal from Tristan Wicklund at 1:42 in overtime sealed the fate for the Yellowjackets. In their previous matchup, a hat trick from Grace Wittkopf propelled St. Norbert to a 6-3 victory. UWS now holds a record of 1-7 and will face Wisconsin-Eau Claire in their first WIAC home game of the season on Saturday, December 6.
In men’s basketball, Wisconsin-Superior let a significant lead slip away, ultimately falling to Loras 68-65 in a closely contested game. The Yellowjackets led by as many as 18 points early on and maintained a comfortable margin until the Duhawks surged back in the second half. Despite a strong performance from Caiden Lecce, who scored 21 points, UWS struggled with 24 turnovers throughout the game. The Yellowjackets will look to rebound against Wisconsin-Stout on Wednesday in Menomonie, Wisconsin.
As the teams regroup and prepare for their upcoming matches, fans are eager to see if UWS can capitalize on these learning experiences and turn their fortunes around in the weeks ahead. Stay tuned for updates on their progress!
