Urgent Winter Weather Advisory: Up to 5 Inches of Snow in Erie
URGENT UPDATE: A winter weather advisory is now in effect for Southern Erie, Pennsylvania, as the National Weather Service has forecasted 3 to 5 inches of snow starting at 6 p.m. today and lasting until 7 a.m. Monday.
Heavy snow is expected to intensify late this evening, with snowfall rates reaching up to 1 inch per hour. Winds are forecasted to gust as high as 35 mph, creating hazardous conditions that could severely impact your commute tomorrow morning.
Authorities urge residents to plan for slippery roads and exercise caution while traveling. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation emphasizes the need to adjust driving speeds according to conditions, as winter weather can lead to treacherous driving situations.
Statistics reveal the seriousness of winter weather impacts: over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries occur each year due to hazardous driving conditions.
Officials strongly recommend that if you must travel during this storm, you should share your travel plans with family or friends, detailing your destination, route, and estimated arrival time. Prepare your vehicle adequately; a full gas tank, windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, and warm clothing are essential supplies.
If you find yourself stranded, remain calm and stay inside your vehicle. Inform someone about your situation and attach a cloth to your antenna to signal for help. Avoid walking to safety, as conditions may be unsafe.
Be vigilant for snow plows and give them space; only pass when safe visibility allows. Always check the latest road conditions before you set out to make informed decisions.
As the storm approaches, remember: safety is paramount. Stay tuned for further updates and prioritize your well-being during this winter weather event.
