Thanksgiving Leftovers Deadline Approaches: Don’t Risk Your Health!
UPDATE: As Thanksgiving festivities wrap up, a crucial deadline for enjoying leftovers is fast approaching. Health experts warn that the window for safely consuming your holiday meals is limited, and the time to act is now.
FoodSafety.gov has issued an urgent reminder: perishable foods must be refrigerated within two hours after serving. If you’re planning to dig into that turkey or mashed potatoes, be aware that after this time frame, bacteria can multiply rapidly, especially at room temperature during family gatherings.
Monday, November 27, is a critical cutoff day. If you’ve savored Thanksgiving leftovers all weekend, experts recommend that any remaining food should be eaten, frozen, or discarded by then. After four days in the fridge, the safety of your leftovers diminishes significantly.
How long can you keep things frozen? According to health professionals:
– Cooked turkey: 2-3 months
– Gravy: 2-3 months
– Pies and cakes: 2-3 months
– Cooked stuffing and mashed potatoes: 1-2 months
To keep track of expiration dates, label your containers with the date of storage. This simple step can prevent unwanted waste and potential health risks.
When it comes to reheating, it’s essential to do it safely. Cover your food to ensure even heating and prevent messes in the microwave. Before diving back in, make sure your leftovers reach a safe temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit to eliminate any harmful bacteria.
As families gather to enjoy their holiday feasts, the importance of food safety cannot be overstated. Make sure you’re informed and prepared. Don’t let your Thanksgiving leftovers go to waste—act now to ensure your health and safety!
